We commissioned 21 brand new pieces for the four concerts between February and May 2013. See below for details, programmes and video and audio of each concert.
CMV1 'Songs'
Wednesday 13th February, 8pm - St Paul's Church, St Paul's Rd. BS8 1LR

Bethan Waters (soprano), Luis Ingels (Clarinet) and Richard Gillies (piano) performed four brand new commissions alongside repertoire from Cage, Ligeti, Rorem, Kovács and Laitman. This concert also featured a tribute to Jonathan Harvey following his death in December 2012; audiences were treated to his 1980 masterpiece Mortuous Plango Vivos Voco in its full eight-channel version as intended.

CMV2 - 'Strings'
Tuesday 19th March, 8pm - Victoria Rooms, Queens Rd, BS8 1SA

Ruth Nelson (violin), Roger Huckle (Violin) and Matthew Olyver (Viola) performed solos, duets and trios by Béla Bartók, Cecilia McDowall and eight brand new commissions written for this concert. Bartók's 44 miniature violin duets seen as tiny compositional masterclasses were taken as a starting point and some composers were asked to respond with miniatures of their own, the other commissions were for solo viola, solo violin and a trio all set into relief against Cecilia McDowell's expansive and fantastically moving trio Rousseau's Execution.

CMV 3 - Acronym special 'CMV meets NME'
Wednesday 1st May, 8pm - Victoria Rooms, Queens Road, BS8 1SA

Bristol Universities New Music Ensemble (Cond. Richard Barnard) performed commissioned works for full ensemble as well as smaller ensembles in this the most ambitious instrumentation for CMV yet. Alongside student works they performed Neal Farwell's piece The Memory Toy for ensemble and electronics where interaction between ensemble members as well as between ensemble and electronics guides improvisatory elements built into the non-specific instrumentation.

CMV 4 - 'New Music in the South-West'
Sunday 19th May, 8pm - Colston Hall 2, Bristol

New Directions for CMV?... In this final concert of the series, curated by Julian Leeks, we experimented with a new format - local composers such as Fitkin, Skempton, Pickard and Ellisson were performed at Bristol's central, municipal concert Hall. The collection of performers also took on four pieces of music composed especially for this concert alongside cornerstones of the canon such as Messiaen's Le Loriot.
